$250,000 Against Sarasota Schools For Student Misplacement

The Sarasota County School District has reached a settlement with the family of an 18-year-old boy who was inappropriately placed in a program for severe cognitive disabilities children. He started when he was in third grade, and spent more than five years.

The two sides decided of a settlement in the case that sparked an investigation into Sarasota’s special education programs and found that the system may have placed more than one hundred other non-disabled students in a program for those with cognitive disabilities.

According to the settlement, the School District will pay the 18 year-old $250,000 and cover the costs of tuition at a private school for up to four years.
