$950,000 Settlement For Riverdale player’s heatstroke death

A $950,000 settlement was approved by the Lee County School Board for the mother of a Riverdale High School football player who collapsed due to heat illness during a summer workout and died nearly two weeks later in 2017. 

The lawsuit was filed by Laurie Giordano over 16-months by alleging that the Riverdale head coach James Delgado and school board failed to care for her son, Zachary Martin-Polsenberg, 16, during a workout on June 29, 2017, when temperatures were over 90 degrees.

The school boar unanoumously agreed to a settlemement of $950,000. It also agreed to host an annual football game to honor the memory of the boy.
